Soil Sampling Time Is Here

With much of the summer behind us already, we are fast approaching the start of the harvest. Considering this, it is also a good time to start thinking about soil sampling. For some time, Agvise and other university and industry specialists have encouraged growers to soil sample behind the combine. There are good reasons not to wait until mid-September to sample your grain fields. First of all, sampling before fall tillage will give you a more accurate 0-6 inch core when testing for P, K, ph, zinc, organic matter, and other nutrients. Secondly, Agvise Laboratories uses a sampling date adjustment of .5 lbs of N per day before September 15 to account for N mineralization. this adjustment is a very good tool in forecasting additional N that will be repleased into the soil. Consequently, there should be no worries about hidden nitrogen. Lastly, getting your results back early will ensure that you have plenty of time to organize your fertilizer needs for fall.
